"Experimental Characterization and Modeling of the Influence of Masonry Secondary Elements on the Dynamic Response of Reinforced Concrete Structures"

"In light of periodic reassessments of seismic hazard levels for nuclear facilities, more realistic and detailed modeling is necessary to accurately capture the forces transmitted through structural components. Reinforced masonry infill walls, often considered as secondary elements, are typically neglected in conventional seismic analysis approaches. This thesis aims to experimentally characterize and model the behavior of such walls, by developing a robust test–calculation dialogue. The experimental campaign includes shear triplet tests and diagonal compression tests on both unreinforced and reinforced masonry. A Multiview Digital Image Correlation (M-DIC) technique is employed to precisely measure displacement fields and crack development within the material. These data are crucial for updating micro-scale models, incorporating several nonlinear parameters. Real boundary conditions measured during the tests are taken into account, and parameter identification is achieved using a Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU) algorithm. To effectively prepare the experimental campaigns, a virtual testing methodology has finally been developed. This approach helps optimize experimental parameters and ensures the identifiability of the model parameters."
