Multiscale fracture mechanisms in bone

Abstract

Although fracture mechanics is considered central in the mechanical performance and durability of engineering structures, the mechanisms of cracking and toughness are still unclear in biological materials of living systems. When it comes to the structural integrity of our bones, which is the major structural material of our bodies, it is of prime importance to gain insights into their deformation mechanisms, their structural design, and their biological adaptation in order to be able to prevent and repair bone fractures. Tackling this question requires a mechanical approach combined with particle physics investigations to push the limits of knowledge in biological sciences. As part of this seminar, advanced x-ray synchrotron experimental techniques (nano- to micrometer length scales), as well as macro-scale mechanical testing, will be presented. We will show how these techniques might be used to provide a foundational understanding of the mechanisms by which collagen capacity of deformation and damage repair can be impaired by disease or treatment.
