Identification of the magnetization of ferromagnetic sheets subjected to low magnetic fields and high mechanical stress: Application to closed loop degaussing of submarines

This seminar focuses on the magnetic discretion of submarines. A steel hull, subjected to significant variations in mechanical stress and immersed in the Earth's magnetic field, may experience a substantial change in its magnetization due to the magnetoelastic effect. This magnetization, which generates a local magnetic anomaly, can be a potential source of detection for the vessel. Closed loop degaussing (CLDG) is a system that compensates for this anomaly in real time. It involves an onboard network of magnetometers to identify the magnetic state of the hull, as well as a current loop system designed to minimize the magnetic signature. The development of this system requires the formulation of advanced electromagnetic modeling techniques, the resolution of ill-posed inverse problems, and the delicate implementation of experimental validations in a low magnetic field. The seminar will present the various methods developed in G2Elab to address this issue, methods whose application now extends beyond the confidential domain of ship magnetism.
