Research activities

Adaptive control of numerical simulations

  • guaranteed and accurate global/local error estimators
  • techniques for constructing balanced fields
  • non-intrusive approaches to error estimation
  • various applications (multiscale, XFEM, transient/vibrational dynamics, iso-geometric analysis, viscoplasticity, etc.)

Model reduction and model error control

  • multi-scale couplings (atomic/continuous, heterogeneous/homogeneous, deterministic/stochastic, transport/diffusion, etc.)
  • reduced bases and separation of variables (POD, PGD) for parameterised problems
  • control and adaptation of reduced models with respect to quantities of interest

model calibration and validation

  • inverse problems (error in modified behavioural relationships, Bayesian inference)
  • robust treatment of measurement noise and model error
  • optimal sensor placement
  • rich data (image correlation, fibre optics)

data assimilation and model enrichment

  • real-time validation, test/calculation dialogue (DDDAS)
  • time sequential approaches, Kalman filters
  • data-driven model enrichment (hybrid twin)
  • physics-driven learning

Optimum control

  • real-time control of mechanical systems
  • guaranteed control with error limits
  • control synthesis from reduced models
