Revisiting dynamic failure of brittle materials using ultra-high speed high resolution imaging

Résumé

Crack propagation requires high resolution imaging devices to be analyzed using full-field measurements. For analysing dynamic failure, this is a critical issue as usual mono sensor cameras decrease their resolution as their frame rate increases. As an alternative, we use a Cordin 580 multi-sensor camera that allows for acquiring 78 frames of 8 Mpixel up to a frame rate of 4,000,000 frames per second.  After developing a dedicated strategy for displacement field measurements using this camera, we have been able to analyse dynamic crack propagation in PMMA. Experiments were performed using a gaz gun and dynamic crack propagation and branching was observed. Analysing these data, we proposed a branching criterion based on usual LEFM concepts allowing to capture the observed failure scenarios. The criterion is further validated on results obtained by dynamic phase field fracture simulations.
