Computer-generated imagerie (CGI) for numerical and experimental mechanics… and more

The tools for generating synthetic images, used for making visual effects or animation movies, can be of great use for numerical and experimental science: from generating databases of images for machine learning algorithms, to the design of complex experimental setups, as well as data visualisation and outreach.
The free and open source blender is getting widely popular in the community of computer-generated imagery (video games studios, animated movies, …) and is finding its space in the scientific community over different fields: visualisation of complex proteins (MolecularNodes), virtual testing (blenDIC), forensic science (Forensic architecture and Focale), outreach…

This talk will give an overview of different kinds of applications of CGI tools, usually as part of a more complex pipeline, and how they can help researchers and engineers.

Biography

Matthieu Vitse obtained a PhD from LMT Cachan in 2016. He started in 2018 working as a freelance on the development of blender addons (plugins), among them blenDIC, a toolset for setting and performing virtual digital image correlation experiments, as part of EikoSim’s EikoTwin Virtual. This add-on is now used by engineers and researchers in various companies or labs like Airbus, Arianespace, MBDA, ICA, LMPS, …

He is now CEO and 3D analyst of Focale Expertise, a multidisciplinary team that provides expertise on cases involving heterogeneous types of data (audio, video, testimonies, experts reports …). Focale is specialised in building space-time reconstruction of complex events. Their studies are based on audiovisual, spacial and architectural analyses, physical and optical simulations as well as open source investigation.
